It was expanded to Department of Metallurgy and Department of Metallic Materials for Engineering, and further reorganized into Department of Materials Engineering and Applied Chemistry, combining with the department of chemistry. After Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering Course was established in April, 2014, accompanied by re-construction of Faculty of Engineering and Resource Science into Faculty of Engineering Science. This re-construction stood on the viewpoint of development of materials science and engineering in the 21st century. Organization Now

About 244 undergraduate students and 32 postgraduate students belong to our department (Year 2018). Many students come from outside Akita prefecture. Students gather together from all over Japan. This distribution is rare unlike those of other universities located outside of Tokyo or Osaka. Graduate School has Master's Program, followed by Doctor's Program. Some foreign students and post graduates from othe r universities also belong to our graduate school, not only graduates from Akita University.
26 staffs (5 professors including 1 working for Research Center of Advanced Materials for Breakthrough Technology, 5 associate professors and 6 lecturer, 1 assistant professors, and 8 technical officials and Clerical Staff) are involved in the Course. This means that one staff takes care of 2 students in rate, referring that one grade has about 57 students each. This is our feature that realizes a precise education.
The course consists of 2 divisions and other supporting organizations. Every student will belong to one of the divisions, and will perform graduation research at the 2nd semester of the 3rd grade.
