1) What's Materials Science and Engineering?
Materials science and engineering is an academic field, in which
theory and method to produce useful materials from natural resources,
are investigated. And then, the theory and method is applied to
make final industrial products. Please think about steel plates
for bodies of vehicles. The origin is an iron ore (oxides of iron).
Iron ores are reduced into iron melt in blast furnaces. This melt
is cast into a proper die. Cooled and solidified iron are rolled
into plates and then the plates are heat-treated to possess suitable
mechanical properties for vehicles. Note that iron ores, as such,
have no worth to human life, but iron plates are very worth to
our social life. In order to complete those steel making process,
various technique concerning reduction theory of iron oxides,
heat-related behaviors of iron, methods of making thin plates
from iron slabs, etc., should be fully understood. Materials science
and engineering does realize these.

and chemical properties, for treatments such as processing and
heating, for controlling complex chemical reactions, and for prediction
of properties by computer simulations, etc. to make materials

word, materials science and engineering is the central and basic
field of all the advanced researches. That's why materials science

3) Social Requirements
to Materials Scientists and Engineers

Scientists or Engineers, who have professional
knowledge and skill on materials, are wanted by the modern society
to produce new materials keeping safe and comfortable human
life, and for maintaining the earth environment. Of course,
it is quite important to master other fields of engineering
except for materials, that are foreign languages, presentation
skills, etc. We have been made a special effort to improve our
research and learning programs to train students as to satisfy
the social requirements. And also, we are expecting many youngsters
to join in our department who are willing to realize a great
world.
